About Us

ABOUT US

Hearing loss affects the quality of life for both you and your family, often leading to depression, cognitive loss and physical decline. At Amanda’s Family Hearing, our board-certified doctors of audiology provide hearing testing, hearing aid fitting and education, repair and maintenance of hearing devices, tinnitus treatment solutions and ear wax management.

Founded by Dr. Amanda Barbur in 2020, the audiologists aim to restore and preserve this under-appreciated sense. The sooner you address impairment, the better patient outcomes.

We are more than just a hearing aid store! Through in-depth audiology evaluation with advanced state-of-the-art testing equipment, we create a detailed care plan that’s unique to your level of hearing assistance. Working with the top manufacturers of hearing aids, we offer the best experience in high-definition sound. Models include behind-the-ear, in-the-ear and in-the-canal, and completely-in-canal, which are virtually undetectable. Most are Bluetooth-enabled, allowing patients to directly stream sound including phone calls and television. We also offer other services and products such as, custom hearing protection and ear buds, and captioned phones.

We don’t want anyone to struggle with affordability, so we offer financing and bundled packages with low monthly payments, that include hearing aids and ongoing maintenance costs.

Treating tinnitus is a specialty of ours. Since this persistent noise in the ears is often connected to hearing loss, first we rule that out. Usually when you address the loss, the tinnitus improves. For when it is not connected to hearing loss, causes range from exposure to loud noise, certain medications, head trauma and ear canal blockage. Although there is no cure for tinnitus, we work with patients to minimize its symptoms.

No one is just a number to us! We take the time to get to know our patients and offer personalized care like a true family hearing center should.  It is not uncommon for us to treat several generations within the same families which we love!

Community awareness about hearing health is a mission for Dr. Barbur and her staff, and they do outreach efforts and screenings in local senior centers, nursing homes, independent living and assisted living facilities.

OUR CARING

AUDIOLOGISTS

Amanda Barbur, Au.D.

Doctor of Audiology

As an audiologist with lifelong hearing loss, I’m uniquely suited to help my patients on their better-hearing journey. I understand the challenges, the frustrations, and the hesitation to even try out technology — I, too, avoided hearing aids! In fact, it was MaryAnn who convinced me to try my first devices when I worked part-time at the front desk for her in college. It’s my firsthand experiences with my own hearing loss that helps people relax and open up about their own experiences.

I earned my doctorate in audiology in 2012 from the Northeast Ohio Au.D. Consortium, I’m a fellow of the American Academy of Audiology, and I’m certified by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.

I am a nature girl at heart. I love to be outdoors, especially walking the local hiking trails. Throw some deer, birds, and squirrels into the mix and I am one happy camper! I also enjoy spending time with my husband, James, and young son, Colton, who is always on the move and keeps us entertained constantly.

Kevin Burkitt, Au.D.

Doctor of Audiology

I am a new provider with Amanda’s Family Hearing. My name is Dr. Kevin Burkitt. I have been an audiologist for 23 years, but to this point those 23 years have been spent working in Michigan. My wife and I moved to Cleveland a little while ago and have been enjoying the many wonderful attributes this area has to offer. We lived near Lansing, Michigan, and I am a dedicated Michigan State University fan. We have two daughters who are now 23 and 19 and a dog named Toby. I look forward to working at Amanda’s Family Hearing and meeting many of you in the future.

Julia Saxon, Au.D.

Doctor of Audiology

I am new to Amanda’s Family Hearing and I am so excited to be a part of this team and your hearing health! I graduated from the University of Akron with my bachelor’s degree and I earned my doctorate from the Northeast Ohio AuD Consortium. I love working with cochlear implants and hearing aids. I am happiest at work when I am figuring out new technology and helping my patients understand speech better.  When I am not at work, my heart belongs to my big, silly dog and a good book! I am a big coffee fan and I am always in search of the best coffee shop in the area. If you have a favorite place you want to share, I’m all ears!

OUR FRIENDLY

STAFF

Nancy Stoneman

Office Manager

I love the field of audiology, knowing that on any given day a child is hearing new sounds or an older person is rediscovering sounds they’ve been missing. Here at Amanda's Family Hearing, they care about me as a person, and there’s a genuine spirit of shared cooperation in helping each patient hear their best.

Whether at Northeast Ohio General Hospital, in the university hospital system, or at the Society for Rehabilitation, I have spent most of my career doing what I’m passionate about — working with people and providing compassionate customer service in the medical field.

Outside of the office, you can find me spending time with my grandchildren, working in the garden, riding my bike, or enjoying a walk.

Hannah Guzicki

Patient Care Coordinator

Being someone who has a passion for the healthcare field, I am very excited to gain experience at Amanda’s Family Hearing in the Audiology field. I am very excited to further my career while being in such an amazing work environment!

I graduated from Indiana University Bloomington in 2020 with a Bachelor of Science in Public Health in Community Health. I am very excited to take my learnings from school and apply them in the real world to serve the wonderful community of Northeast Ohio. Outside of work I enjoy spending time with my amazing husband, watching the Real Housewives, being a fan of IndyCar, and discovering new restaurants.

James Barbur

Director of Operations

A dedicated member of this family and this team! I am the proud husband of Dr. Amanda Barbur! I am a veteran U.S. Marine who served active duty for nearly 5 years and since has transitioned to working for the City of Stow Fire Department as a Lieutenant. When I am not saving lives at the Fire Department, I am helping Amanda’s Family Hearing where I can! I am a jack of all trades and doing just about everything short of the technical stuff Amanda handles. You may see me fixing things, dropping off food, or you may even hear me answering the phone. I am here to help and if you see me, I’d be happy to strike up a conversation with you!

WHAT OUR PATIENTS ARE SAYING

FREQUENTLY

ASKED

QUESTIONS

  • Why are hearing aids so expensive?

There’s different pricing depending on the level of technology you’re getting. We spend time counseling patients about types that are within their budget. We also offer financing options and bundle packages so patients can pay for the aids, fitting, programming and follow up care.

  • How long does a set last?

It depends on how well you take care of them and when you may wish to upgrade. Every case is different. Many patients keep them running over 10 years. If there are significant advances in their aids, it might be a good idea to upgrade after four or five years.

  • Is there any treatment for tinnitus?

This is a complicated answer. First, we start by testing a patient for hearing loss, since these two conditions are often related. If there is hearing loss detected, we treat that and the tinnitus usually goes away. If hearing loss is not detected, we counsel patients on ways to minimize tinnitus symptoms, with background noise, or playing music in the background.

  • What’s the best way to care for hearing aids and make them last longer?

You should routinely keep your aids clean and checked professionally every 4-6 months. You should make sure they are properly programmed and send them in to be reconditioned to keep up with the warranty.

  • How long do hearing aids’ batteries last?

Most hearing aids we work with are rechargeable and can usually last 25-30 hours depending on the model. Generally, batteries should be replaced every two to three years.
